2007 Maxwell Finalist - Skid Row Housing Trust: St. George Hotel
Overview:
The St. George Hotel in downtown Los Angeles is a model of supportive housing in the city with the nation’s largest homeless population (80,000). The St. George, a turn-of-the-century hotel rehabilitated by the Trust, provides both permanent housing and extensive supportive services including health care and mental health counseling, financial and employment guidance, and support and substance abuse programs. This comprehensive, self-contained approach enables the formerly homeless residents of the St. George to address the multiple challenges they face without the struggles imposed by life on the streets. A substantial number of the hotel’s inaugural residents continue to thrive in permanent housing today; 82 percent of the residents at the St. George have maintained their housing for one year or more.
