2007 Maxwell Winner - Umpqua Community Action Network: Grandview Homes

Overview:
Grandview Homes is located in Douglas County, Oregon, a rural and isolated area with a population of only 100,000 spread over 5,000 square miles. Grandview is the first and only development in the county providing permanent housing homeless families with mental illness issues. The mentally ill in the area find it virtually impossible to locate and maintain housing in the community due to their limited resources, exacerbated by the public’s lack of information on homelessness and mental illness coupled with ignorance and fear. Umpqua Community Action Network (UCAN) uses a team-based approach to identify and resolve issues that could potentially lead to evictions and offers opportunities for intervention and education. UCAN also actively educates the public about homelessness and mental illness and ways to assist in addressing the needs of the homeless and the mentally ill.
