During the month of October, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program in partnership with the city of Phoenix Housing Department issued housing vouchers to 10 homeless veterans.

“Nothing I do as mayor will ever be as important to me as making sure our veterans are treated with the respect they have earned,” said Mayor Phil Gordon. “The city of Phoenix is proud to provide housing support for our veterans through the VASH program.”

Additional help may be on the way. Caseworkers received four new VASH voucher requests, which are currently being processed. On Nov. 26 there will be a briefing over these cases, as well as any additional requests received by caseworkers.

“Our participation in this important program allows us to provide much-needed services and housing resources to our veterans who have honorably served this country,” said Councilman Tom Simplot, chair of the City Council Housing Subcommittee.

The VASH program, which is facilitated by the city of Phoenix Housing Department, combines HUD housing choice voucher rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the VA at its medical centers and alternate sites in the community.

In December 2007, Congress approved the 2008 Consolidated Appropriations Act to allocate $75 million dollars for the VASH program to provide vouchers and case management assistance for approximately 10,000 homeless veterans nationwide. Through this program, the city of Phoenix, along with more than 150 municipalities and healthcare agencies, receives homeless veteran case referrals from the VA.
