General Questions About Homelessness:
Where can I find information on best practices in preventing homelessness among ex-offenders?

Under the new Serious and Violent Offenders Reentry Initiative, the federal government has allocated $2 million for each state to develop new programs that will address the needs of people returning from prison sentences. Without help, people in these circumstances are likely to become homeless and to commit additional crimes.

Most states have completed detailed plans for using these funds, although few programs are yet up and running. The National Alliance to End Homelessness has analyzed the plans and identified a number that have strong housing approaches, including providing temporary reentry housing and working to place returning ex-offenders in community-based housing.

More information about the Serious and Violent Offenders Reentry Initiative can be found at the Department of Justice Website.
