Supportive Housing:
What are some examples of communities where permanent supportive housing has been used effectively?

There are many examples, in communities across the nation, where supportive housing has been used effectively. For example, Hennepin County, Minnesota reported a 43 percent decline in family homelessness; New York City increased the percentage of sheltered families moving into permanent housing; Portland and the County of Multnomah announced a plan to end homelessness in 2004 along with establishing 350 units of permanent housing; and San Francisco reported that homelessness dropped 28 percent.

The Case Studies and Success Stories section of this website includes a complete collection of these stories by state. A few that you may wish to start with include:

Cedar Hill, a single-site project in New Haven, Connecticut, serves formerly homeless and dually diagnosed adults, has 25 efficiency apartments, and opened in December 1997.

The Outreach Center Apartments in Cloquet, Minnesota are five apartments with supportive services built above a consumer run drop-in center for individuals with mental health issues. This project is a particularly good example of a small, rural service provider developing and owning its first supportive housing project.

Deborah’s Place, a supportive housing program for women in Chicago, IL, has been providing services for long-term homeless women since 1985. Today, Deborah’s Place has two innovative practices in their permanent supportive housing programs: preventing eviction and educating tenants in the humanities.
